How to Answer: Why Should We Hire You?

What’s the best way to answer when the interviewer asks why they should choose you over another candidate who has the same qualifications? Standing out in your job search is crucial, but it’s also hard. The truth is, a lot of people are just as qualified as you when it comes to comparing resumes. When a hiring manager asks you, “Why should we hire you?” they are really asking, “What makes you the best fit for this position?” When you answer this question, your objective is to sell yourself to the interviewer (kind of a sales pitch of your best qualities) and convince them that you are a strong and unique candidate.

Why do interviewers ask “Why should we hire you”

The interviewer’s job is to hire the best candidate for the position. Because they only have a short window to assess whether or not you might be a good fit for the role, they want to understand a few key things at the end of your interview. Those things include whether you are a good culture fit for the company, if you can be successful in the role, and how you might contribute to their business goals.

So, what is the best way to answer this question?

This is your best opportunity to “wow” the hiring manager. It is important to plan your answer to this question before you even step foot in the interview. First, start by reading the job description and picking out the details that best match your experience and skills. Next, pick 5 to 7 of your best qualities and accomplishments that correspond closely to the job description. These 5 to 7 points should include some of the following:

    • Industry experience
    • Technical skills
    • Soft skills
    • Accomplishments
    • Education
    • Awards

In addition to highlighting your personal accomplishments and experience, you should research the company thoroughly. Spend time studying the company’s mission, goals and recent announcements can help you to answer this question. You can use this information to explain how you are connected to their values and how you might help them accomplish key business goals.

Similar to an elevator pitch, you should plan out your answer to this question in a brief yet informative couple of sentences. It is important to note that you should not write a script, but rather think about the points you want to talk about. You should also keep this pitch short, in about the 1 to 2-minute range.
